PURTZER GOLF ACADEMY PUTTING
TIP
Since putting makes up roughly 40-45% of all golf shots
you would think that we would spend quite a bit of our practice
time putting. I am all for that, especially if you are working
on the correct fundamentals.
Since most of the great players are great putters, we like
to give putting and the short game a great deal of attentions
in our Academies and our Instruction.
Many people think good putters have good touch and feel
and they do. BUT, is it is much easier to have good touch
and feel if you roll the ball the same way every time. Good
mechanics leads to good feel!!
I would like to give you some of the mechanics that I see
in most great putters. (These tips pertain to right handed
putters)
Purtzer Golf Academy Putting Fundamentals
#1 Putter blade faces to the target (on
a straight putt-middle of the cup). IF the blade is square
the ball will roll better.
#2 Good posture-tilt over ball from the
waist (hips) so the arms hang freely. The weight should
be slightly on left side at address (approximately 52-55
L-45-48 R). Feet slightly open (left foot pulled back off
the target line an inch or so).
#3 Keep your right elbow very close to
your right side. I cannot think of one great putter that
did not have his right elbow very close to their right side.
#3 Eyes over the ball and square to the target line or over
an extension of the target line behind the ball.
#4 Hands should be slightly ahead of the
ball at address and the ball positioned inside the left
heel an inch or two. Stance should be shoulder width or
slightly less.
#5 The backstroke should be fairly compact
and the wrists firm and the forearms locked (producing a
pendulum action) through the stroke. Let the putter accelerate
thru the ball down the targetline.
NOTE How many times have you heard on TV
or from one of your playing partners "He (you) really
decelerated on that putt". MOST of the time the reason
for that is that the putter has gone back too far. If I
see one COMMON mistake in putting it is that the putter
goes back too far and decelerates into the ball.
#6 Keep your eyes on the ball at impact
and after impact keep your eyes still and looking at the
blade of grass under the dimple you were looking at before
impact. Listen for the ball to go into the hole.
#7 Think about taking a putting lesson
if you are not putting like you should.
We sincerely hope these tips will help you roll more putts
in the hole and help you post some low scores in the near
future!!
Keep it in the short grass and hole those putts!
