GOLF GREENSIDE SAND BUNKER TIP

by PGA Professional Paul Purtzer

PURTZER GOLF ACADEMY SWING TIP - Greenside Bunkers

September 2004

The September Tip is on how to play confidently out of the bunkers.

Our first goal when we are in the bunker is to get the ball out of the sand and onto the green.

As you adddress the ball, aim left of the target and open the clubface so that it is facing slightly right of the target and grip the club so that the left thumb is on top of the shaft. Your weight should be 65% on your left side and the ball positioned off your left heel. Wiggle your feet 1/2" or so in the sand and choke down 1/2" on the club.

Good players always focus on the ball when hitting a normal shot. But when you are in a greenside bunker you need to pick out a speck of sand 2 1/2-3" behind the ball to focus on.

As you start the club away from the ball, swing it up quickly with your right hand, immediately pointing the butt of of the club toward the ground. Keep your eye focused on the speck of sand behind the ball, and keep your weight on your left side. The left arm should be straight throughout the shot as it should be with all swings.

The forward swing starts slowly with the lower body first, your chin stays level (head does not drop down or pull up) . Then hit firmly thru the sand under the ball with your right hand. You want to be aggressive with this shot and you can be if you stay focused and your head stays level! A well-executed sand shot has a distinct "whoomph" sound at impact.

As always, I hope this tip will help you play better golf. See a Purtzer Golf Academy professional to make sure you are working on the right things to get the most out of your game, and be sure to take advantage of the tools on www.AspiringGolfer.com in conjunction with this tip. Go to the practice bunker with this tip, make careful notes to yourself about the things you feel when doing this and then store them in your AspiringGolfer.com lessons learned log.

Swing smooth and hit it long and straight!
